A Few Must-Do’s In and Around Lake Winnebago

Lakes are always a treat for people. It’s a source of food, a source of livelihood, and an excellent place for recreation. Where there’s recreation, people gather, and where people gather, business rise. In Lake Winnebago, there’s plenty for everyone. There are vacation rentals, natural attractions, local foods, family friendly activities, and a host of natural resources.

So, when you’re around the lake, what’s there to do?

Fishing in the Fertile Waters of Winnebago

Lake Winnebago is Wisconsin’s largest inland lake. This means ideal fishing opportunities to go around all year long. A few of the sport fishes worth tackling are the Northern Pike, Bluegill, Largemouth Bass, White Bass, and the mighty Sturgeon. The shallow reefs provide great fishing spots, as long as the weather allows.

They also offer ice fishing, where the people would rent out shanties. In these somewhat crude, but heated huts, they will drill through the ice and fish from there. It's not much for people looking for a bit more action, but for people who want to relax, ice fishing is definitely a must-try.

Ride on the Winnebago Road Trip

If you have a car and want a good long trip to tour the lake surroundings, then take on a road trip. The road trip and tour starts at Fond du Lac and goes around the entire lake, then passes through Oshkosh, the Fox Cities, and finishes around Calumet County. You'll be given a brochure so you'll be guided on where to go.

This is a great opportunity to take if you don’t know where to go first, and want an overall view of what’s what around the one of the largest inland lakes. The entire trip lasts about an hour and a half, perhaps longer if you find something you fancy.

A Visit to the Lakeside Park

Parks have a ton of things to offer. A wide open space for all manner of activities, shelters for groups or individuals to take shade and relax, and a playground to thrill the minds and bodies of children. The Lakeside Park located at 555 N Park Ave, Fond du Lac, has everything a park needs and more.

Being a lakeside park, it has a Waterfront outdoor area, boat rentals, mini carousels and mini-train rides, and even has a quaint lighthouse for photo-ops and an overall nice place to sightsee.

If you plan on going as a large group, you may contact the park management to have them reserve a shelter for you.

Menominee Park Zoo

This is something for the kids and animal lovers alike. Located at 520 Pratt Trail in Oshkosh, this seasonal zoo offers a lot of things to do, with the animal attraction being the icing on the cake. It has Asphalt trails, Boat tie-ups, Casting docks, Fishing, Picnic Areas, and Shelter.

For people who are looking for some exercise, there’re two soccer fields, five baseball or softball fields, five volleyball courts, and an ice skating rink.

Ultimately, there’s a lot of things you can do here, even just relaxing on the bleachers. There’s plenty of concession stands in case you need snacks. The place is handicap accessible and they are available for special events.

History of Lake Travis: Floods that Brought Flourish

Natural disasters are, well, disastrous to everyone affected by it. Yet as nature had proven, every disaster is an opportunity for growth. One such story of bustling life after a disaster had struck, is Lake Travis’ history.

A Dam to Protect and Serve

The lands that surround the winding waters of Lake Travis is rich. Enough to have people set up farms despite a terrible setback: flooding. This humble area of in the city of Austin, Texas was somewhat prone to immense flooding. The flooding occurs when lake water levels rise up, swallowing the surrounding land. There’s extreme potential in the lands around the lake if it wasn’t for the yearly floods.

You could say that the people of Lake Travis had enough. In 1935, a torrential summer rain brought about high floods that devastated the areas of Austin. To preserve their ways of living and pursue greater dreams, the denizens of Lake Travis banded together and formed a committee to solve the flood problems. In December 1936, the Lower Colorado River Authority was born. Authorized by the United States Department of the Interior, this group was given the task of preventing further floods from wiping the surrounding lands.

Their first course of action was to create a dam to have increased water supply. They decided on a low dam first, since it would be quick to build, and enough to suppress small floods and be a flood control mechanism. The dam was built at the Marshall Ford area and went as high as 190 feet. It was then named the Marshall Ford Dam, aptly because of the location.

Two years later, the dam met its match. A huge flood rose and spilled through the dam during a downpour in July. The Lower Colorado River Authority banded together once more and decided to raise the dam. From around 190 feet, it was raised to 265 feet to counter the previous flood height, and more, should the skies decide to test them. On August 25, 1942, it was renamed to Mansfield Dam. This was in honor of Joseph Jefferson Mansfield, a United States Representative. J.J Mansfield worked for two years to ensure that the dam is getting what it needs to be built.

Thanks to the dam, the people that make their homes and living around Lake Travis find themselves worrying less about the floods and more about how they can make the most out of their lives and livelihood. With the floods less of an issue, the lake now provides a source of income for all people. Its calm waters make for great boating opportunities. The depth and expanse of the lake are also ideal for scuba diving, swimming, fishing, and even more exciting water activities such as wakeboarding.

Presently, there is a power plant situated on the dam. This hydroelectric power plant generates 108 megawatts. That amount is enough to power more than 30,000 homes. Not only does the dam prevent floods, it also powers homes and business.

What started as a land that suffers yearly from floods, now has a dam that generates power for its people, and rich resources to make a more-than-decent living. Now, this humble abode in the city of Austin, Texas is a has a great flood control mechanism that makes it a rich water supply source and a great place to stay.

Must Do’s When Visiting Lake Travis

With great bodies of water come great opportunities, with great bodies of land to boot. Texas is perfect for people looking for adventures in the warm air. What better way to spend it than close to a nice cool lake.

Lake Travis’ winding, dragon-like shape is already a sight on its own. The road trips are great here and vacation rentals. But why settle for views alone if the place offers more, much more than that?

Hey, Cupcake!

What’s Hey Cupcake? It’s a nice shiny little trailer with a big pink cupcake on top. They sell cupcakes, hence the name. Why mention it here? Because they are the first food trailer to ever set foot in Lake Travis. They sell cupcakes and ice-cream, with seasonal recipes worth watching out for, such as the winter-season mint-chocolate cupcakes, to the Pumpkinator, an autumn treat that sells like pancakes, (or cupcakes for that matter.)

If you want a bite of this, look for the shiny trailer around Ranch Road 620 and 2222. They are pretty hard to miss.

Lake Travis Zipline

Rushing through the air at speeds exceeding 70 miles per hour, at a height exceeding 100 feet, with an almost unbeatable view of the lake. Sounds fun? If so, you shouldn’t miss the zip line. It’s 2800 feet of cable, arguably the longest zip line in Texas. This is a great outdoor recreation activity besides the golf courses you might be used to at home.

Located at 14529 Pocohontas Trail in Leander, the zip line starts on top of a hill. You are then strapped into a special harness which will have you zipping past a body of water and to the other side. The experience may be brief for those watching from afar, but to the ones strapped and sailing through the air, it lasts long enough for a lifetime of memories. Unless you’re a budding thrill seeker, or an enthusiast of outdoor adventures, especially yourself.

Flat Creek Estate Winery

For the connoisseur of all that is fine and wine, Lake Travis has its fair share. Among the distilleries, one worth mentioning is the Flat Creek Estate Winery. They offer great food (with pizzas and pastries being the people’s choice), wine tasting, and an amazing ambiance that really puts it all together.

This land of goodness is located around 24912 Singleton Bend East Rd in Marble Falls. You can choose to either wander around for a bit or sit down and have the staff serve you. Once you’re nice and fed, you can have a tour of the Marble Falls and partake in some wine tasting. If you want to take home some of the goodness, you can purchase one from their gallery of unique wine and spirits.

Hamilton Pool Preserve

This is not just any ordinary swimming hole, Hamilton Pool Preserve is one that is rich in nature. The place is filled with nearly everything nature can display when it comes to rock and water. There are waterfalls, pools under natural rock formations, and enough greenery to satisfy any nature-lovers.

Located in 24300 Hamilton Pool Road in Dripping Springs, this swimming hole often needs a reservation. Expect long line in the weekend, and keep a lookout if they allow swimming for the day. Weather dictates if swimming is allowed, but there’s far more to enjoy apart from it.

If you are looking for great road trips, wedding venues, outdoor recreations, and stunning real estate, then Lake Travis is a must-visit

The History of Lake Placid

Among the Adirondack Mountains in the state of New York, there is Lake Placid. The namesake of the Fenders guitars “Lake Placid Blue” guitars stretch at 2,170 acres and reaches 50 feet in depth. The lake and the village named after it are known as popular destinations during the winter. But before Lake Placid became a winter resort, the area’s extended winter posed a problem for its first settlers.

Before the pioneers, the area of Lake Placid was the settlement for the Iroquois and Mohawk Indians. Historians believed that they resided in the area during the summer, but went further south during winter.

Elijah Bennet and his wife, Rebecca, were the first white settlers of the area in 1800. They arrived at the place from Vermont after the Revolutionary War. Bennet served in the war and injured his left arm, leaving him handicapped. He, his wife, and their seven children resided on the land which is now currently the upper golf course of the Lake Placid Club. Golf course lovers would now go to this place to enjoy their favorite sport.

Between 1800 and 1815, more people arrived at the area and settled in. The place slowly became a community. The residents began constructing churches, schools, and other establishments. However, by 1816, the residents experienced the “year without a summer.”

The year was ridden with blizzards all year round. The crops died due to the harsh weather and the residents were threatened with starvation. Farmers decided to move farther to the west, leaving only ten families to remain in the area.

One of the families who remained were the Osgood family. Squire Osgood took the opportunity and took the abandoned fields left behind by the families who moved away. Eventually, they established the first tavern and inn of the place.

During the late 1800s, population around Lake Placid bloomed again. In 1895, Melvil Dewey, the inventor of the Dewey Decimal System, designed the Placid Park Club. this became the inspiration of the villagers, who later adopted the name Lake Placid. The village known as Lake Placid was incorporated in the 1900s.

The Placid Park Club was later called as Lake Placid Club. The social and recreation club drew in the interest of the rich and famous. During the 1900s, more people saw the area’s potential for winter activities. In 1929, Dr. Godfrey Dewey, son of Melvil Dewey, talked to the International Olympic Committee (IOC). He presented that Lake Placid had the best winter sports facilities in the United States.

In 1932 and 1980, the Lake Placid Club became the headquarters for the IOC during the Winter Olympics. Lake Placid itself became the site of both Winter Olympics and Olympic athletes and gold medal winners for the said event experienced their success in this location.

Today, the lake houses Buck Island, Moose Island, and Hawk Island. It is the source of drinking water of the village of Lake Placid. The lake gets its water from the springs and the streams from the Adirondacks mountain. Its shores have nearly 300 houses, but most of the houses are unoccupied for most of the year. Due to this, the lake’s water remains clean.

Winter sporting is now one of the great things to do here in Lake Placid. Being an Olympic center in the past, hosting gold medal winners and other Olympic athletes made it a great place to add to your vacation events calendar.

The Historical Tidbits

It may be good to start the history of San Francisco Bay by restating the fact that it is one of the best-looking natural harbors in the world. It’s also interesting to note that the land has lain undiscovered for at least two centuries since it was first explored during the various California expeditions.

The first leading expedition in San Franciso Bay was led by the great conquistadors of the European countries in 1522, just about thirty short years after Columbus’ exploration of the great New World. The expedition was made possible because of the colonizers’ ability to amass hundreds of soldiers near Acapulco right near Mexico’s Pacific coast.

Another interesting historical event that happened in the Bay was the time when a series of political strifes delayed the conquistadors to expand their plans. San Francisco Bay was also the first place in 1769 that the explorer Gaspar de Portola found in his efforts to expand his voyage.

San Francisco Bay was also the land where Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo established an expedition commanded by Mexico’s viceroy in 1542. He was the man who then became the first European to explore the present-day California. The expedition he led was not smooth-sailing. In fact, he did not sail too close to anywhere near the bay’s coast in fear of thunderous storms that could capsize their ships. With that exploration. He became one of the pioneers who were able to reach explorations toward northern California.

Another historical event about San Francisco Bay was when the Portuguese-born explorer Sebastiano Cermeo explored the bay on his way to the California coastline. He was able to do this after four months of traveling with his crew at the present day Drake Bay. He did this with the help of a crew with 70 men. He ended the trip after going to Acapulco and establishing their camp there.

Another exciting historical event that happened in San Francisco Bay is when in 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino explored Santa Barbara and Monterey and established his roots there.

Summary and Conclusion

There’s a lot of history and stories behind San Francisco Bay. With this article, you learned where to start studying San Francisco and the right keywords to search to learn more about it. With this article, you now have an overview of the landscape that surrounds this historical place.

San Diego: History

There’s so much to learn about the history of the world. In fact, people may be confused on where they start. There’ so much information online, and history videos they can watch. The internet is filled with all the unlimited information that one can learn to learn history. In the case of the history of San Diego, such history can be condensed in an article. This article will attempt to do that. It will try to explain some of the important historical events that happened in the place. At the same time, it will offer valuable information for anyone who wants to learn about the region. Let’s start.

We can start the history of San Diego by describing its geography. You may also find value in the fact that San Diego is comprised of the area where the San Diego bay used to be. Also, the recorded history about San Diego can be traced to when the Europeans first discovered the place. In fact, it may be accurate to say that San Diego was the first ever area in California that the early European navigators explored. This is where they settled. This is where they established the business, packed up their reinforcements and refilled their navigation supplies. With that, San Diego was described simply as California’s birthplace.

Another interesting fact about San Diego is the fact that Native Americans were the first settlers of the land. Specifically, it was the Kumeyaay people that had found roots in the region. They were residents of San Diego for about 12,000 years.

The Europeans that had settled in San Diago were first led by the explorer named Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. He first discovered San Diego bay in 1542, but not until 200 years later that the Europeans settled in the land. The establishment of the Europeans were only made possible by the fort centers and missionary delegates that stayed in San Diego in 1769. The rulers of San Diego were first the Spaniards, and then later on were transferred to the Mexicans.

It may also be necessary for you to remember that San Diego only became part of the US in 1848. It was not until that time that San Diego was named as the only county seat of the San Diego County.

San Diego also started as a small region, until in 1850 CalIfornia granted it the state county status. Because of this, many advances happened in the area. Some of those include the establishment of military facilities that shaped the landscape of the region.

It may also be interesting for you to know that the name San Diego was only given sixty years after its discovery. The name was given by Sebastian Vizcaino when he found the place as he was mapping the areas belonging to Alta California in 1602. Also, the establishment of the settlers could not be possible without religious intervention. The Catholic influence of the explorers in San Diego gained the trust of the people. With such approach, the settlers were able to build a successful colony, as well as a trade route for better expansion.

Salish Sea: History

We all want to learn the heritage of the places we live in. We want to learn from the past. We read stories because we want wisdom from the mistakes of the people who died. In the case of the history of the Salish Sea, there's so much to learn. It may not be enough to put all of them in one article. You need more than an hour to know every basic information about it. You definitely can’t read everything in this feature. But, we can attempt to put all of the essentials in this piece. We can try to summarize the stories. That way, we still have an idea of what happened in the Salish Sea without bombarding ourselves with too much information. Let’s start.

The first important information you may want to know about the Salish Sea is its geography. That is why it’s useful for you to know that right now the Salish Sea is about 18,000 km2 wide. With that landscape, it comprises the inland waters and marine life of Juan de Fuca Strait as well as the Strait of Georgia, along with Puget Sound. These are the main islands that comprise the rich historical backdrop of Salish Sea. These islands are connected to each other with various straits, passes, and channels.

You may also like to know that the Salish Sea uses various waterways to establish its boundaries. For thousands of years, the Native people found in the Northwest Coast of the region are the main settlers around the Salish Sea.

Another historical fact about the Salish Sea is the trivia that it is one of the world’s biologically rich inland seas. With its unified and organized ecosystem that links to Washington State’s Puget Sound, it maintains itself as a wonderful place to explore nature. Politically, the Salish Sea is maintained and bounded by both Canada and USA. But, there’s no natural transition or barrier between the two. However, the mutual peaceful agreement between the two countries is what keeps the relationship of the two always in good standing.

With regards to explorers who managed to first set foot in the Salish Sea territories, there’s a lot of them in the Salish Sea. The explorers are usually from European countries. With the explorations, many discoveries were revealed that transformed Salish Sea into a prime location today.

Much of the history of Salish Sea comes from the ecological viewpoint One of the few important ecological history that Salish Sea has a lot to do with the major water bodies around it, which include the Strait of Georgia, the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Puget Sound. The vast flora and fauna of the land made the Salish Sea as a rich landmark of ecological research in the United States and Canada.

Another interesting fact that you may not know yet about the Salish Sea is the fact that its boundaries reach from Desolation Sound to the north end of the Strait of Georgia. This gives the Salish Sea a wider scope regarding the lands it’s linked to.

Puget Sound: History

The world we live in today is filled with stories. The rich history of things and events make us appreciate the places we live in. The more we know about the history, the more we appreciate how the country or region has developed, progressed and transformed. We need the history as our guide. We can use the past as a light to what we can do to better the things in the present. In this article, we will try to learn the rich history of Puget Sound to appreciate how it has transformed today. Let’s start. The History It may be necessary to start the history of Puget Sound in 1792.

It was the great explorer George Vancouver who first discovered Puget Sound and claimed it for the expansion of the empire of Great Britain. He claimed the land on June 4, 1792, and since then helped develop the progress of the region. One of the companions of Vancouver was Lieutenant Peter Puget, which led to the name.

Another historical landmark of Puget Sound was in 1818 when the United States and Great Britain both claimed the Oregon Country. Because of such claims, they agree to what is called a joint occupancy. This agreement led to the resolution of the Oregon Boundary dispute. In 1846, the Oregon Treaty was signed, and Puget Sound was then made part of the regions that were disputed by both parties in 1846. Another interesting historical event in Puget Sound happened during the early European settlement. This happened in Fort Nisqually, which is a fur trade post in HBC aka Hudson’s Bay Company. It was during this time that the Puget Sound Agricultural Company established their businesses. The farms and ranches established helped export food and provisions from and to Fort Nisqually.

Further, the first American Settlement that happened on Puget sound was the people of Tumwater. This group was founded last 1845 by the group of Americans that came via the Oregon Trail. There were also settlements north of the Columbia River. This group of settlements was led by George Washington Bush to create restrictions among the citizens. It would also be useful to know that in 1853 the Washington Territory in Puget Sound was formed, partly because of the Oregon Territory. The Northern Pacific railroad project in Puget Sound was also one significant part of its history in 1888. When this link was created, many businesses in the area boomed with great improvement.

Summary and Conclusion

The history of Puget Sound is filled with stories. These stories form the foundation of the people, explorations, and tragedies that had happened to grow the land. It is also because of these events that make Puget Sound a rich region to explore. In this article, you also learned that Puget Sound forms the rich landscape of the American History. Without it, the story of the growth of America would not be complete. Without the stories these events formed, we wouldn’t have an entirely different story of how the world has historically grown.

Oregon Coast: History

There are so many things to learn about the world. With all the online tools we have, learning all these won’t be hard. We just need Google. We can just type a certain set of keywords, and you get your stories. With a few simple clicks, all the information you need is available. That is the power of technology. This is the modern information age we live in now. This is no different in the case in learning about Oregon Coast.

There’s a lot of rich history in Oregon Coast. In fact, you won’t be able to read everything in one sitting. You can’t learn it all in this article. But, we will attempt to summarize the essentials in this article. We will offer the best and most interesting trivia that you will enjoy learning. Let’s start.

To start learning about Oregon Coast, we may start at the fact that it’s a region in the U.S. State, Oregon. The coast generally runs across the Pacific Ocean and forms a western border that crosses the entire state.

The Oregon Coast is also bounded to the region by what is called the Oregon Coast Range. The coast also stretches across about 363 miles of the Columbia River from the north and reaches the state border of California in the south.

The History

It may be necessary to start the history of Oregon Coast with its indigenous peoples. The first settlers of the coast started living in the area about 11,000 to 13,000 years in the past. The main reason that the indigenous tribes settled in the area was that of its rich wildlife. Its natural resources are rich, and wildlife diverse. It’s easier to survive in places like the Oregon Coast because of its rich natural landscape.

But, there’s not enough information about these early peoples. The earliest archaeological sites that had been discovered was only about 3,500 years ago. Before that, there wasn’t enough info.

There were also various groups and tribes who established their families near the Oregon Coast thousands of years ago. Some of these groups include the Tillamook, Alsea, Siuslaw, Coos, and Clatsop. There was not enough information to know about these tribes’ lifestyle. But, there was enough evidence to show that they developed their language and culture.

Another important historical event that happened in Oregon Coast would be European exploration. In Oregon Coast, the early recorded explorations happened in the 18th century. It was the Spanish mariners who first sailed to Oregon Coast, traveling from Mexico. The first explorer who did this was Vasco Nunez de Balboa. He traversed the entire Pacific and reached the shores of the Spanish crown. Another explorer who led the Spanish expedition was Juan Jose Perez Hernandez. Aboard the Santiago in 1774, he explored Oregon Coast and hid his records. Later on, when his records were discovered by other explorers, the credit was taken from him.

That said, Oregon Coast has a rich historical background. Learning it in this article will help you appreciate Oregon Coast more.
